Early Brass Spanish Candlestick Holder

Early brass candlestick holder, square base, c. 1690-1720, 9 3/4" high. Step-footed, square-rimmed base with incised decoration, rising and tapering in a conical form to a small, suppressed ball knop, then expanding to a large wonderful, ridge-decorated knop, capped by a deep, cylindrical candle cup. Note the pin just below the large knop. This pin anchored a ceramic core which was employed to reduce the quantity of expensive brass used. The ceramic core gave the maker a way to cast the stem in a hollow manner. The technique of casting in two halves, then brazing together, was invented later. Excellent condition.$750
